More than ever, everyone is looking for a work-life balance in today's
busy world. However as Muslims, it is important we strive for a work
& afterlife balance.
This balance is based on the premise of responsibility as described in the following hadith:
Narrated 'Abdullah: Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said,
"Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges. The
ruler who has authority over people, is a guardian and is responsible
for them, a man is a guardian of his family and is responsible for them;
a woman is a guardian of her husband's house and children and is
responsible for them; a slave ('Abd) is a guardian of his master's
property and is responsible for it; so all of you are guardians and are
responsible for your charges." (Sahih Bukhari Book #46, Hadith #730)
So you're responsible at work as an employee and need to fulfill the
responsibilities upon you, and you're responsible for your spouse and
children (and parents) and need to be home to fulfill your
responsibilities towards them. This sense of responsibility will allow
you to better build a work & afterlife balance. However this will
not be easy and will require continuous review and adjustment.
Sincerely,
nao
